Local Provisioning For IP Phones

A short while ago VUCs Randulo tweeted that he had recently updated the firmware on his Polycom phones. He said that he did this using a local provisioning server setup temporarily just for the task. If you’re using a hosted IP-PBX then you may not have a suitable server running 24/7/365.

If you don’t run a provisioning server all the time then booting the phones can take a lot longer. On boot-up the phones simply fail to contact the provisioning server and eventually boot using their existing internal settings. But this means waiting through a series of time-outs, which is the principle source of delay.

As is often the case some interesting stuff on the weekly VUC call was recorded in the session after the formal call ends. This weeks post call discussion about conferencing, Talkshoe, the cancellation of Skypecasts and HDVoice was really interesting. Twitter, Phweet & American Airlines

Earlier this week Andy Abramson discovered that he could make a Phweet call via Twitter, thereby circumventing the VoIP blocking provisions used by American Airlines Aircell operated GoGo in-flight wifi service.

This is definitely interesting as Aircell somehow manages to allow Skype IM, but stop Skype voice calls. This implies that the Tring Me Flash VoIP widget is doing something at least a little unusual.

Today’s VOIP Users Call & My SIP URI

Well it certainly was a pity that today’s VOIP Users Conference call didn’t happen. Randulo, our host, was just about to start the call when he lost IP connectivity with the world. As such he lost control of the Talkshoe conference bridge. People could call in, but he could not unmute anyone.

Judging from irc channel and the Talkshoe web app there were a number of people trying to be on the call. However, the conference bridge kept us all muted. Too bad.
