Today’s Squawk Box call on peer-to-peer SIP was very interesting. It had a nice slant towards SOHO and SMB VOIP installations, and went into a decent level of detail.
Dan York was the host, filling in for a vacationing Alec Saunders. His guest was David Bryan, co-chair of the IETF’s P2PSIP Working Group and also CEO of SIPpeerior Technologies.
Over at www.broadbandreports.com a VOIP forum member has noted an interesting problem. When he suffered a power outage he also lost his cable modem service. This despite the fact that he dutifully provided a UPS solution to keep his network gear running. We can infer that the CableCo doesn’t provide similar UPS capability in the local cabinets serving his area.
This is in stark contrast to Telco’s, who historically provide continuous service through power outages. They have put huge effort into achieving 99.999% uptime, and continuous power is a major consideration.
There are so many Asterisk appliances around these days. Even so, some of us have DIY tendencies. I still stand by my recycled T5700 thin client as a host platform, but I accept that I couldn’t sell that to a corporate or even SMB user looking for an Asterisk solution. Then this morning I read about Koolu and specifically their W.E. Appliance. This looks like a great little host for Asterisk!

On a VUC call a couple of weeks ago Dean Collins & Co. detailed the VDEX-40 from Technoco, with The Amanda Company providing US distribution.
I spent much of this past week in Los Angeles. I was all set to fly home Friday morning but my last meeting canceled so I got myself on the last flight out Thursday evening, a 6pm departure.
Except it wasn’t. Thunderstorms in Houston, and bad weather elsewhere in the east, had caused a myriad of delays and cancellations. My 6pm departure was pushed back until almost 9pm. No big deal. No point in making a fuss. It was still better than killing the next day getting home.
Besides, I could use the time to attend a conference call that I’d heard about. Iotum has launched a series of conference calls with interesting people to mark the introduction of their new Calliflower conference service. This past Thursday evening they interviewed William Shatner on the occasion of the release of his autobiography, “Up Till Now.”
