OpenPeak Intro’s OpenTablet 7
What with the Mobile World Congress 2010 happening in Barcelona this week there’s some interesting stuff being announced. One that caught my attention today is the formal announcement of OpenPeak’s OpenTablet 7.
I’ve been following OpenPeak for some time, and was very interested in the Verizon HUB, which was also their hardware. However, Verizon Wireless managed to wrestle a possibly great product offering into failure with onerous contractual terms and their typical heavy handed insistence upon absolute control.
I’m hopeful that as OpenPeak makes progress in other parts of the world with more inspired carriers that we might again see their wares offered, this time on more sensible terms. In particular their creation of an open widget marketplace is critical. I can think of a myriad ideas for widgets, and a range of commercial opportunities for local businesses that could leverage that screen space to win end-user business.
Not to mention the potential for a small touchscreen device to integrate into home automation systems. Yowza! That’d rock. Where do I sign up?
Did I mention that it’s a phone, too? Right, it is. It’s wideband capable, too. Here’s a nice video about the product family.
Here’s their press release from earlier today:
BOCA RATON, FL and BARCELONA, SPAIN — OpenPeak Inc, a leading provider of multimedia touch-screen devices and device management platforms, today officially debuted its new OpenTablet™ 7, an ultra-sleek, portable, touch-screen tablet that combines high-quality telephony with advanced multi-media communications services and applications to deliver an engaging, interactive experience. The OpenTablet is expected to be adopted by multiple branded customers and service providers and ship in the second half of this year.
Powered by Intel’s next generation handheld and tablet platform, codenamed “Moorestown,” the OpenTablet 7 features a high-resolution 7-inch multi-touch TFT LCD screen with LED backlighting, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and cellular connectivity, HDMI output and dual cameras for capturing both high-definition video and still images. The on-board USB interface and MicroSD slot expand the device’s connectivity, while built-in speakers and microphone allow the device to serve as a fully functioning telephone and multimedia platform. At just 9 inches by 5 inches, and only .59” thick, the device is as slim and unobtrusive as a photo frame, and weighs just 1.15 pounds.
“The OpenTablet is the ultimate control panel, delivering the most commonly accessed multi-media services right to your fingertips anywhere,” said Dan Gittleman, CEO of OpenPeak. “The all-in-one device allows you to sync schedules, check movie times, listen to music, watch videos, get weather updates, and even monitor energy usage and home security, all from a single, easy-to-use device.”
For consumers, the OpenTablet is a communications command center for the home converging voice, video and data services into one elegant, simple and fun to use portable device. By integrating home security systems and energy consumption monitoring applications, homeowners can enjoy quick and easy access to a total home dashboard.
For service providers and utilities, the OpenPeak ecosystem delivers a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for deployment of hardware, software, applications and device management unlike any other on the market.
Leveraging the powerful Intel Moorestown platform and built on the proven, reliable OpenPeak platform, the OpenTablet is a ready-to-deploy device that provides plug-and-play ease of installation at an affordable price point. The device is available with either a desktop docking station or handset docking station.
“The Intel Moorestown platform will deliver exceptional performance for a range of rich, interactive, Internet-based experiences while dramatically reducing power”, said Pankaj Kedia, director of global ecosystem programs in Intel Corporation’s Ultra Mobility Group. “Based on this next generation Intel platform, the OpenTablet represents a powerful, user friendly and innovative design in the emerging tablet market segment.”
OpenPeak’s software framework enables designers and developers to create highly interactive applications using Adobe® Flash® CS4, eliminating the need to learn new programming languages or complex APIs.
OpenPeak’s integrated device management services allows providers to remotely provision, monitor and update customer devices on demand over broadband networks to ensure the delivery of the most up-to-date services and software.
A fully partitioned, white label application shop provides revenue sharing models and content availability controls, allowing service providers to deliver the most popular multi-media applications right into the home.
“In addition to the exciting possibilities for in-home use of the OpenTablet, the device also provides a powerful way for enterprise businesses to integrate telephony and multi-media services right on the desktop,” Gittleman said. “And, hospitality providers can also use it to increase hotel revenue and guest loyalty by delivering in-room dining options, information about spa services, nearby attractions, airlines and travel services and more right to the bedside table in an ultra-modern touch-screen device.”

This is a very interesting device. I could easily see some really cool applications for it. Would love to have this on my office desk, and when the doorbell rings, have it switch instantly over to security camera video to see if it’s worth answering. The handsets look great too. You definitely need to get a hold of this for review!
I agree! Now if only they might provide a sample. I live in hope.
