The Return of Tivo: Edge OTA
Back in December 2024, we were very sad to be forced to give up our longstanding use of our Tivo DVR. We’d been Tivo household since 2001. However, the decision was forced when Xfinity would/could not replace a failed CableCard.
As a short term solution, we replaced Xfinity cable with YouTube TV. In the months since then, I’ve noticed that we only access a couple of channel via YouTube TV. Mostly our local network affiliate and the Food Network. And YouTube TV has already raised their price once.
Further, we still live in hurricane alley. I can recall times, after a large storm, when our internet access was out for days or even weeks. When wired service (cable, DSL, fiber) is all down, wireless services (4G/5G) are by definition stressed as well. All the above makes being wholly IP dependent more than a little precarious.
