Deal: Insta360 Link 4K Webcam

For years I searched for a 4K capable webcam. Early models, like Logitech’s Brio were merely adequate. It managed to deliver higher resolution, but really didn’t offer much improvement in other aspects of image quality. For the higher prices commanded by the newer webcams, I would have liked to see better dynamic range, color rendition, and less noise.

Insta360 Link

I was still looking for better webcams when I put the Insta360 Link on my Amazon wish list. At $299 it was interesting, but more than I was willing to spend. I literally forgot about it, until my wife decided to get it for me as a present.

So it is that I’ve been using the Insta360 Link for over a year. And I like it. In fact, I like it a lot. I like the PTZ mechanism. I appreciate that the camera as has a tally light indicating when it’s in use. Also, that it pivots to downward facing when not in use.

It works well with every app I’ve ever used, including vMix. It delivers good video in my home office, which is relatively dark and brooding, especially on stormy days.

I don’t need many of its fancier features, like AI-based sensing of hand gestures. I do like the controller app, which can present as either a full window or a toolbar. Also, the fact that a web-based remote control can be accessed on a mobile phone.

It makes sense that a company founded on action cams would make better cameras than a company focused on the corporate office and gamers.

I just discovered that it’s been supplanted by a newer model, the Insta360 Link 2. As a result, the company had reduced the price on the earlier model to $179. That’s a whole lot more approachable than before! Highly Recommended!!

PS – going through some old notes, I found that Wired.com agrees with me about the Insta360.
