Finally, We Have A 311 Solution

mjgraves | March 29, 2009

Figure 3: Portech MV-370 SIP-GSM gateway

In the spring of 2008 I installed a SIP-to-GSM cellular gateway as a means of backing up our wholly IP-based home and office phones. The installation of the cellular gateway allowed me to route calls to and from T-Mobile should our DSL circuit go down. In addition, it provided us access to 911 and 411 services that were not at the time provided by our ITSPs.

The one thing we wanted that it did not address was access to 311 service. In Houston a 311 call rings a non-emergency city call center that is intended to take notifications about city services. For example, we call 311 when we see a street light out, a broken fire hydrant, large fallen trees in the roadways or packs of wild dogs roaming dangerously.

Comcast Post-Ike: Just As Helpful As Centerpoint

mjgraves | September 29, 2008

It’s been very frustrating dealing with the utility companies with respect to restoring service in the post-Ike period. At issue is their inability to get and redistribute information about who’s on, who’s not, and routine progress reports. Today for a short while my focus turned to Comcast as our cable tv and cable modem service remains down.

Talking With Two Utility Linemen

mjgraves | September 24, 2008

centerpoint internal Talking With Two Utility LinemenTwo linemen from BG&E had to get onto my property to restore the power lines to my neighbors garage apartment. While they were doing the work I took them some cold bottled water and chatted them up about their experience working on the post-Ike recovery here in Texas. They tell about what-you-would-expect in terms of a tale of chaos theory.

They were working restoring power for Entergy customers in another area last week. Come Sunday they were done and so wondering where they’d go next. Centerpoint didn’t get around to accepting their help until 11pm Sunday night, at which point they were instructed to gather at the Humble Civic Center parking lot Monday morning.

The Lights Are Back On!

mjgraves | September 23, 2008

Utility power was restored at 4:15pm CDT today. Power went off at around 2am Saturday, Sept 13th. That means we were off-grid for 10 days and 12 hours.

English Is A Dynamic Language

mjgraves | September 23, 2008

For example: Ike has new verb context. To be “Iked” is to be left in the dark for a long time as the result of a de-regulatory process.

Houston Utilities In The Post-Ike Period

mjgraves | September 22, 2008

att logo Houston Utilities In The Post Ike PeriodNow I still have a major issue with AT&T, and very much prefer to not give them my business. However, in The Woodland Heights neighborhood where I live we have now been without electricity and cable tv for 9 days. That in an of itself is bad but not entirely unexpected.

The unexpected part is that we have not seen ANY Centerpoint or Comcast branded vehicles in the area. Accepting that Centerpoint, the electrical distribution utility, is using help from utilities all over the state I can say that we have not seen any kind of electrical utility vehicles in the neighborhood, branded for whomever.

Things Found In The Back Yard

mjgraves | August 2, 2008

As a Canadian living in Houston the summer is such a curse. It’s hot. I mean really hot. Humid, too. But even that is not without its up-sides. Orchids really like it here. These are growing in our back yard.

These blossoms have been on-the-go for many weeks. This shot was taken this morning with the new camera (Canon Rebel XSi) that my wife gave me for my birthday.

No matter how rough things seem we should always look for the up-side, and count our blessings.

Houston Will Get Limited Muni Wifi Despite Earthlink

mjgraves | March 29, 2008

Linksys WRT-54G Wifi Access PointWhen last year it was announced that Houston was to get municipal wifi network I had to applaude Mayor Bill White for his vision and drive. There are vast number of people in this city for whom the internet is not readily accessible.

Houston is a huge city with a more pronounced digital divide than many other places. It’s the kind of place where opportunity presented to low income neighborhoods can make a big difference in the lives of people.
