Gigaset DECT Line Announced In The US

mjgraves | January 11, 2009

In all the activity of CES last week one could be forgiven for missing this press release from Gigaset Communications.

Gigaset Communications Announces the Launch of its Popular Gigaset DECT 6.0 Line of Phones in the U.S.

New, sleek versions of the Gigaset A580 and S675 IP, along with the Gigaset SL785, now available in North America

The award-winning Gigaset SL785 embodies the highest level of design and technology innovation seen in a cordless phone. This new design has already been recognized with an international Red.Dot Honorable Mention award, receiving rave reviews for its metal handset frame and charging cradle. The SL785 also includes user-friendly features such as an ergonomic keypad and large, icon-based color display. In addition to its award-winning form, the SL785 is also an eco-friendly phone with reduced power consumption.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ – CES LAS VEGAS – Gigaset Communications is pleased to announce the introduction of its DECT 6.0 Gigaset A580, S675 IP and SL785 phones in the United States. Currently available in Europe, these Gigaset phones have been extremely popular and widely distributed — an average of half of all households in Germany and one in five in Europe now make their phone calls with a Gigaset phone. Now, Gigaset Communications will make available their cordless phones, which have been hailed as a perfect combination of form and function in Europe, to U.S. customers in 2009.

“The DECT phones offered by Gigaset Communications have been highly successful in Europe, so I am excited to be able to make the next generation of that line available for our North American customers,” said Rod Keller, CEO of Gigaset Communications USA LLC. “These phones are great because they are not only high-end, stylish phones, but also offer incredible functionality. North American consumers are always looking for the latest and greatest when it comes to communication devices; these new DECT 6.0 phones offer a unique blend of high quality, innovation and stylish design.”

“While the overall cordless voice segment has been under considerable pressure, retail, cordless phones based on DECT 6.0 technology have enjoyed an acceptance rate, as exhibited by the growth in market share,” said Stephen Baker, Vice President of industry analysis for The NPD Group. “Cordless communication devices based on the DECT 6.0 technology are likely to emerge as the standard here in the United States as it is in the rest of the world.”

The entry-level Gigaset A580 IP phone offers up to 25 hours of talk time and 210 hours of standby time, allowing for near limitless conversation time with family and friends. The A580 IP is also eco-friendly, cutting power consumption by up to 60 percent compared against conventional Gigaset phones. The illuminated display and keys of the A580 IP allow for ease of use, even in the dark.

The Gigaset S675 IP is a cordless phone with an integrated answering machine that enables users to make calls over the Internet without a PC, as well as fixed-line networks. The new High Definition Sound Performance(TM) technology (HDSP) delivers broadband calls with crystal-clear voice quality — users will feel as though they are having a face-to-face conversation. Both phones also offer Gigaset’s NextG Communications capability. With these phones, consumers can easily and intuitively access data services, such as directory look-up and RSS feeds, previously available only via a computer or more expensive cellular-based smart phones.

So, is it truly available in the USA — or is this like the announcement last year in which they were never able to market the phone in this country?

I cant’ speak to anything in the past, but I know someone who actually has a pre-release version of the S685IP the runs at US DECT frequencies and on US power. I don’t think that they’re available at retail yet. I think they’re probably working on a channel strategy now.

The short answer is I don’t know if you can just yet. I’m told that they’re developing their retail channel. Rest assured that as soon as I know I’ll post about it.

No post since Feb. Are they still working on their channel strategy?

I have been in touch with people at Gigaset US. I finally met them at last week’s HDComms Summit in NYC. I’m told that the gear will be available through a few notable online retailers early in June.

E4 and others are taking orders now. The initial shipments for stock have been placed and are en route from manufacturing. We are supposed to have Tony Stankus as a guest on the July 10 VUC call. He picked that date to be sure that there would be hardware available for order that day.

    Great phone!

I got mine at VoIP Supply (http://www.voipsupply.com/siemens-gigaset-a580-ip), they have them at BestBuy.com and supposedly are supposed to have them in their stores but I called and checked an none of the stores in my area have them in stock.
